Lessons from Driving

Take Me to a Place I Should Go

I’m a kind of person wherein I always think of what lessons I could get in every particular experience, what I always do, and the things around me for I believe that God always teaches me something to make me become a better person day by day. And I want to share with you about what I always do everyday and the lessons I learned and will continue to learn from them.

I always use motorcycle when I get to my school. It’s not because this is the only transportation that I have, which is really true, but that it’s more convenient to use when it comes to dealing with heavy traffic. From Monday to Friday, I face many different hassles in the street. Difference kinds of transportation big and small, fast and slow. Many types of drivers, mean, patient, careless, reckless, expert and novice, that I need to deal with patiently.

Every morning before I start my day, I always have to thank my loving God for giving me a brand new day to learn, to teach and to be taught by Him and the people and things around me.

So, I have to do my daily household chores as a preparation. I have to pitch some water from the well. I have to feed my chicken with my little boy with me helping me to feed his chickens too in very small ways. Sometimes he’s so annoying because I need to put him a bit away from the chickens to keep the chickens from harming him while feeding. My wife cooks food for the whole family and sweeping the front yard for fallen leaves.

Ok! I’m done with my preparation to work! It’s time to go now!

Some object lessons I have:

Perfume
The first thing I should do is that I put some perfume on my body so that when I meet people they could feel that I’m nice to be with. I’m comfortable to be with them too. The scent of my perfume sometimes penetrates the whole room and oftentimes just the people around me. This reminds me of the righteousness of my Lord Jesus that I should put on wherever I go. By His help I could be whom they want to get along with.

Helmet
Second, I have to wear my helmet. My helmet can protect me from dust, noise and the heat of the sun. I always tell my wife to remind me of my helmet if I forget. It protects my head when accident happens. It gives me focus on the road and some vehicles in front of me, at my side and the rear. So, what I learn from it is that what protects me from all darts of human opinion strike to me anywhere, in anytime is the truth that I have in Jesus. He says in John 17:17, ‘Sanctify them with Thy word, Thy word is truth.’ The Word of God, the Bible is the truth that could protect me from many different human opinions that allure me in many forms.

Fuel
I have to check the tank of my motorcycle if I still have gasoline to get to school. If it’s really enough to get to the place I should go. Basically, every driver has to do this, if not we might be in trouble along the way. Then, one thing always pops up in my mind is that, “Did I invite the Holy Spirit before I step out of my house and go to school?” or “I’m confident enough of myself that I could get there in my own.” The Holy Spirit is my constant Companion until Jesus comes. Without Him, pretty sure, I couldn’t make it. Along the way, there are so many things happen and might happen. I could meet many different people, with different faith and ideology, many of them based on their experiences as I meet different drivers and vehicles on the road. I really need the Holy Spirit to strengthen my faith as every vehicle needs gasoline.

Brake
Then last thing to be checked is my brake. Is it still functioning? Doesn’t it have problems? What if it breaks or it malfunctions while I’m driving? That’s pretty dangerous. I have to check this most important thing for it determines my safety. That’s where temperance really comes in. Temperance is very important. It’s not only abstaining from the things that can harm me but it’s also reminding me to use judiciously that which is healthful, speaking of healthy lifestyle. My health will be in trouble if I’m not temperate. The way I speak. Did I hurt people? If I’m not temperate of my desire, my family will be in trouble. Divorce will happen. My children will be in trouble. Temperate in every area of my life puts me out of trouble. Temperance is very important just as a brake is so important.

Raincoat
Ooh! I almost forget to mention my raincoat. I always take my raincoat with me wherever I go. Rain falls anytime in my country for we are prone to typhoons especially in the months of July to January. So, my raincoat is necessary in my journey to be protected from cold weather. And what is that? It’s my character that little by little is changed by Jesus. The coldness of the relationship doesn’t depend on what the people can do for you but rather what you can do to them to have a warmth relationship with them. How you give spice to your relationship with others.

On my way
So, it’s time to broom up now! I bow down to say a little prayer!

While I’m on my way to school driving my motorcycle, I always meet many different kinds of vehicles, as I have said, big and small, fast and slow, new and old, popular and not. For me it represents that I should meet different kinds of people with different faith while I’m waiting for Jesus’ second coming. Some of them are active, some have been struggling, some have big faith and some are doubting, some are new and some are steady. Some belong to a popular group of faith and some are not. All of them are part of God’s family and are living according to the light that they have. I have to get along with them sharing to them my faith, too.

I could see many traffic rules while on the way, ‘No Right Turn’, ‘No Left Turn’, ‘Stop’, ‘Drive Slowly! Accident Prone Area!’ Speed Limit: 20KPH!’, to mention a few. In the journey of my faith, I also have the Holy Spirit who always reminds me of what I should do, be aware of, reminds me of the danger and guide me where to go.

This is what I always do every day every time I go to school. These are only things that sometimes I forget to ponder. The things that we always do but it’s encapsulated with so many lessons we should learn. Blessings that we always have and experienced will never be noticed anymore but if we open our eyes of faith, for sure the Lord Jesus helps to feel that He is near, if and only if we are so sensitive to His dealing with us.

What about you? Have you learned from the things you always see and do every day? What do you think?
